WHITE OAK, Texas (July 9, 2024) — The Sherman Shadowcats emerged victorious with a 14-10 win over the Piney Woods Timberhogs at Roughneck Stadium on Tuesday night. The win broke the Shadowcats’ four-game losing streak and marked their first road victory of the season. Sherman’s explosive fifth inning, scoring eight runs, was key to their comeback from a 7-0 deficit.
The Timberhogs jumped to an early lead in the first inning with a two-run homer by catcher Juan Murillo (Padres RK), scoring outfielder A.J. Smith, Jr. (Bethune-Cookman). Infielder Tyler Martin (University of Mary Hardin-Baylor) then singled to left field, driving in two more runs, making it 4-0. Murillo continued his power hitting with another homer in the second inning, extending the lead to 5-0. In the third, infielder Lukas Hinze (Phoenix College) singled to right field, bringing home infielder Karsten Fidler (Stephen F. Austin State University) and pushing the lead to 6-0. Smith, Jr. scored on a wild pitch in the fourth inning, making it 7-0.
Sherman began its comeback in the fifth inning when outfielder Sandry Hernandez (Colorado Rockies DSL) homered, driving in infielder Alex Rangel (Dallas College Brookhaven). Designated hitter Matthew Herrera (Centenary College of Louisiana) then flied out to center field for a sacrifice fly, allowing outfielder Zach Henry (University of Texas at Arlington) to score, unearned. Catcher Cole Carnes (Fort Scott Community College) reached first on an error by the second baseman, scoring infielder Korson Hastings (Trinity University), unearned. Infielder Anderson Acinger (LSU Shreveport) singled to center field, driving in two more unearned runs, and Hernandez singled again to center, bringing in two more runs, unearned, capping off the eight-run inning and giving the Shadowcats an 8-7 lead.
The Timberhogs tied the game in the sixth when Smith, Jr. hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring infielder Charles Chatman III (Knox College), unearned. Sherman pulled ahead again in the seventh with a single by Henry, a sacrifice fly by Hastings, and a two-run homer by outfielder Ryan Sessions (Redlands Community College), making it 13-8. Hernandez added another run in the eighth with a sacrifice fly, scoring Carnes.
Piney Woods attempted a late rally with Murillo singling to right field in the eighth, bringing home Smith, Jr., and Hinze singled to center in the ninth, driving in infielder Alton Gatson (South Arkansas College), but it wasn’t enough as the game ended 14-10.
