Sherman, Texas (June 9th, 2024) – The Sherman Shadowcats met the Fort Smith Marshals for the very first time on Tuesday night as they won 4-2 in a pitching duel.
Tanner Carter (Tarleton State) got the start on the bump for the Shadowcats as Jett Frazier (Carl Albert State) and both were outstanding. Carter went five innings, and struck out six batters as Frazier pitched seven innings with the first five being hitless.
After both sides started the game with a three-up and three-down first inning, Fort Smith got on the board first. Eli Merritt (Hastings College) was brought home on a wild pitch thrown by Carter to make it a 1-0 game in favor of the Marshals.
Forth Smith and Sherman both came up with no hits in the third, but the Shadowcats were able to answer in the bottom of the fourth as Sandry Hernandez (Rockies DSL) scored on a wild pitch to the backstop to tie the game at 1-1.
The Marshals left the bases loaded in the top of the sixth but weren’t able to find their next run until the top of the seventh as Keypher Contreras DeLeon (Navarro College) doubled in the right center gap to score Michael Speck (Spalding Univ.) and take the lead 2-1.
Sherman answered immediately as Jacob Eccles (Southwestern) touched home plate after another wild pitch thrown by Frazier to tie it right back to 2-2. Frazier only threw two wild pitches during the game, but both came in untimely manner allowing a run to score each time.
After a one, two, three inning from Jacob Broussard (Centenary) in the top of the eighth, the Shadowcats kept rolling, tagging on two more runs. Easton Ford hit an RBI single to score Hernandez, however there was an error by the Marshals center fielder as he attempted to throw home mover Ford the second base. That put the ball in Korson Hastings court with a runner in scoring position and he took advantage with a deep single into the left center field gap to bring home Ford and take a 4-2 lead.
All the Shadowcats needed was three outs to win the ballgame and Broussard wasted no time as he went three up and three down, striking out the final two batters to improve his strikeout total to six.
The pitching heroics earned 4-2 win for the Shadowcats rolling into the second game of the series. Broussard secured the win while Coleton Payton (Arkansas State Univ. Mountain Home) was given the loss.
Game two of the series is on Wednesday, June 12th with the first pitch at 7:05 p.m.
