SHERMAN, Texas (June 18th, 2024) – The Sherman Shadowcats secured a 16-5 win over Texarkana on Tuesday night due to their offensive outburst in the first inning.
Sherman started the scoring against Texarkana in the bottom of the first plating 13 runs on 12 hits as 18 batters came up to bat. After Sandry Hernandez (Rockies DSL) popped out, Matt Herrera (Centenary) singled, and Jaylan Prince (Texas A&M Texarkana) walked, the Shadowcats obtained eight hits in a row resulting in seven runs. Prince came back up to bat and this time with the bases loaded as he clobbered a nuke to right field to make the score 11-0. Ryan Sessions (Redlands CC) scored the last two runs of the inning as he ripped a ball that went over the left field wall for a 2-run home run, making the score 13-0.
All five Rhino runs came in the top of the second as they attempted their rally. Back to back RBI singles from Jackson Glymph (Blinn JC), and Wyatt Cunningham (Montavallo) gave an opportunity for Neil Jansen (San Jose State) with two on as he hit a bomb to left field cutting the Shadowcats lead to 13-5.
The Shadowcats scored another run in the bottom of the third as Easton Ford (Redlands CC) was awarded an RBI after a fielding error by the Rhinos that brought home Hernandez bringing the Sherman lead to 14-5.
In the bottom of the third Gavin Speirs (Howard College) hit the third Shadowcats homer on the day as he shredded a ball to left field to score the final two runs of the game making it 16-5.
Sherman’s starting pitcher Tanner Carter (Tarleton) was stellar on the mound as he went five innings while slinging in a franchise record breaking eight strikeouts to secure his first win of the year.
The Shadowcats advance to 7-10 overtaking the Rhinos who fall to 6-10. Game two of the series is ready to go Wednesday, June 19 with the first pitch set at 7:05 p.m.
