Sherman, Texas (June 9th, 2024) – The Sherman Shadowcats fell in game four of a four game series against the Abilene Flying Bison on Sunday night, losing 5-4.

Box Score

Abilene got on the board first as Drew Detlefson (Dodge City CC) homered to left field with the bases empty to make the score 1-0.

The Shadowcats answered in the bottom of the second as Tyson Woodland (Centenary) grounded out into a double play but that gave enough time for Anderson Acinger (LSU-Shreveport) to come home and tie the game up 1-1.

Two more runs came across for the Flying Bison in the top of the fourth as Jacob Lang (Grayson College) singled to right field to bring home Jackson Illingworth (Cisco JC). Nick Miller (Frank Phillips) followed as he singled into center field to score Mason Krznarich (Three Rivers CC) to take a 3-1 lead.

The Abilene lead wouldn’t stand for long as the Shadowcats bounced right back in the bottom of the fourth with two runs of their own. Both runs came from a Woodland single through the six hole that brought in Matt Herrera (Centenary), and Acinger to tie the game back up 3-3.

The Flying Bison shot back almost immediately in the top of the fifth as Will Magids (Texas Tech) singled to score John Maldonado Jr (Grayson College) making the score 4-3.

Anthony Heredia (St. Mary’s University) then came in to pitch for the Flying Bison and shut down the Shadowcats as he struck out three of the four batters faced in the bottom of the fifth, then went three-up three-down in the bottom of the sixth.

The Shadowcats were able to sneak in a run in the bottom of the seventh after a scuffle between Zach Henry (UT Arlington) and Lang resulting in them both being ejected, Jacob Eccles stole third and on the throw down to Abilene third baseman Riley Hood (McMurry) the ball ricocheted off of his glove giving Eccles enough time to score and tie the game 4-4. That is all Sherman could muster as Heredia struck out Gavin Speirs (Howard College) to end his outing with seven strikeouts.

Some phenomenal pitching from Shadowcats reliever Carson Baugh (Texas Tech) and Dante Cano (UT Arlington) through the eighth inning pushed the game to the ninth with the game remaining tied at 4-4.

Abilene pulled ahead in the top of the ninth as Detlefson hit another solo shot to seal the deal for the Flying Bison as the Shadowcats could not answer in the bottom of the ninth making the final score 5-4.

Cano secured the win for the Flying Bison as Carson Baugh (Texas Tech) was given the loss for the Shadowcats.

Next up the Shadowcats take on the Fort Smith Marshals for the first time with a three game series starting on Tuesday, June 11th. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. from Veterans Field.
